D7 visa step-by-step

Criminal record

It depends on the country, but usually the criminal record takes some time to be requested. That's why we put it as a first step, you can start gathering other documents while your criminal record is in process of emitting. Criminal record should be done with apostile, after you need to translate it and notarise the translation.

NIF (taxpayer number)

NIF number is required almost for all economical activity in Portugal, including bank account opening and renting of a house. You can obtain it remotely if you find a legal tax representative, who will do it on your behalf and take the responsibility for your tax situation.

NIF online in 5 minutes
Open the bank account and deposit the funds

One of the requirements is to have sufficient amount of money on Portuguese bank account. It's easy to count - subsistence minimal €705 multiplied by 24 months (because the first residency permit is valid for 2 years). In case if you want to bring your family - plus 50% for the spouse and 30% for each of dependent kids. We recommend to show that you have more than minimal required amount - it will increase your chance to get the visa and after the residence permit.

Required documents:

  • Passport scan
  • NIF
  • Tax number from the country of residence
  • Proof of address
  • Proof of profession
You can open bank account by yourself only in person. We offer a service of opening bank account remotely by signing the power of attorney (help with gathering papers, forms and examples are included too)

Bank account for €300
Rental contract

To apply for a D7 visa your contract should be registered by the landlord in Portuguese Tax Office. It should be at least 1 year contract, but if it's agreed that you can stop the rent without any fines, you can do it after moving and find another place. To make a contract the landlord will ask your NIF and Portuguese bank account.

Passive income/remote income

Regardless of the type of passive income you will need to order the bank statement for the last 6 months (in English), which shows that you regularly receive the amount specified in the agreement. It will increase the chances if you have passive income for more than 1 year, prepare the tax declarations for previous years to prove it.

If you are going to apply as a remote worker - instead of passive income proofs you have to attach the proofs that you work remotely. Please, pay attention, that in this case to have a good chance for the D7 Visa, the income should be much higher than the minimal wage in Portugal.

Motivation letter

There are no standardized requirements for the cover letter, but from our practice we can tell that simple honest essay positively impact the decision about your Visa. Describe your plans, the way you are going to settle down in Portugal and why did you choose this country.

Make an appointment and fill the form

D7 Visa to enter Portugal is emitted by the embassy/visa center in your home country. So you will have a meeting to provide originals of required documents. What is a D7 Visa?

It is a visa for holders of passive income. Main requirement is being able to prove passive income for at least the past year as well as proof of sufficient funds in your bank account (we recommend 10.000 EUR and more).

What is a D2 Visa?

Unlike the D7, D2 is a visa that is issued to people that are planning to exercise business activity in Portugal (company, freelance, start up, etc.).

What is a Golden Visa?

This is the king of all visas. It is the most prestigious visa type with most privileges (the least amount of required stay per year, the fastest process, broad opportunities for family reunification, tax free import of one vehicle, etc.). Minimum required sum of investment is 350.000 EUR for real estate over 30 years of age and 500.000 EUR for new developments. However, aside from the investment and our legal fees, you will be required to pay all the state taxes related to your application (they are regularly updated, you can consult this information on SEF website).

I have a unique case that doesn’t fall under any of those visa types?

There are of course other cases that may not necessarily be related to any of these visa types. If you have such a case, please contact us, we will be glad to help you and find a solution to your situation!
