NIE in Barcelona: Offices, Appointments, and What to Bring

Last updated: By

In Barcelona, NIE applications are handled at four police offices in the province: the main Comisaría Provincial de Extranjería at Calle Mallorca 213, and alternative offices at Rambla Guipúzcoa, L’Hospitalet de Llobregat, and Sant Cugat del Vallès. All four book through the same central cita previa portal under province “Barcelona”. Slot availability varies sharply by season — summer is the most constrained period. The Power of Attorney route handles the application remotely where in-person attendance is not practical.

The Four Offices

Booking is through the central cita previa portal — it shows available slots across the province, and the office is identified once you select a date.

Seasonal Patterns

Barcelona’s appointment system has a predictable rhythm. Demand spikes from June to September — international students arriving for the academic year, summer property buyers, autumn relocations. Slot availability collapses during this period; administrative capacity does not increase.

The summer window

Slots that would appear within a week in March may take six weeks in late July.

Outside the summer window, the quietest months are October–November and February–March, when international demand is lower and slots are typically accessible within one to two weeks.

If you need the NIE during peak season:

  • Check the portal regularly across the day, including early morning. New slots are released throughout the schedule, not at a fixed time. Daily monitoring is more effective than weekly.
  • Try all four offices in the province. Sant Cugat and L’Hospitalet often have slots when Mallorca 213 and Rambla Guipúzcoa are saturated. The portal does not let you filter by office in advance.
  • Switch to the Power of Attorney route for time-critical cases. The representative books through their administrative pathway and does not compete for standard cita previa slots.

What to Bring

Document requirements are the same across all of Spain: completed Modelo EX-15, paid Tasa 790-012 receipt, valid passport with full photocopy, written justification with supporting document, and carnet-size photos. Full detail in the complete NIE application guide.

In Barcelona, the most common justification reasons are property purchase and employment — officers handle these efficiently when supporting documents are specific. A letter on letterhead, dated, signed, with specific transaction details, addresses most questions at the counter.

A Note on Language and Catalan Administrative Context

The NIE procedure is run by the Policía Nacional (a national body) and operates in Castilian Spanish. However, Barcelona’s administrative environment has a distinct Catalan dimension.

  • The official language of the NIE procedure is Castilian Spanish. All forms and official communications are in Spanish. Catalan-only documents are not accepted.
  • Officers may speak Catalan among themselves and switch informally with Catalan-speaking applicants. Official procedure remains in Spanish.
  • The Catalan regional administration (Generalitat de Catalunya) runs separate procedures — empadronamiento, regional tax, healthcare card, property registry. Some of these can be conducted in Catalan. The NIE stays with the national administration.
  • For international applicants with limited Spanish, the appointment runs in Spanish regardless. Bring a Spanish-speaking person, or use the Power of Attorney route to remove the language requirement.

Who Typically Applies for an NIE in Barcelona

  • Property purchases along the Catalan coast — Maresme, Garraf, Costa Brava. NIE required before the deed of sale (escritura pública).
  • International school enrolment — children of relocating families, particularly UK, German, and Nordic nationals. Each child needs an individual NIE.
  • Start-up and tech sector employment — Barcelona’s role as a Mediterranean tech hub (22@ district) creates a continuous flow of incoming employees, founders, and contractors.
  • Digital nomads and remote workers — drawn by the city’s lifestyle and the Digital Nomad Visa programme.
  • Inheritance from Catalan ascendants — Catalan inheritance law (Código Civil de Cataluña) has specific provisions. Case-specific legal advice is typical.

For tax-related cases: NIE and Spanish tax status.

If Barcelona’s Queue Doesn’t Fit Your Timeline

For international clients for whom the cita previa window is too long, travel is not practical, or a transaction deadline won’t wait — the NIE can be handled remotely under Power of Attorney. You sign a notarised POA in your country; a representative submits the application in Spain; the certificate arrives by email. Full process: NIE via Power of Attorney guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where exactly is the main NIE office in Barcelona?

Comisaría Provincial de Extranjería y Fronteras at Calle Mallorca 213, Eixample district. Nearest metro: Verdaguer (L4, L5) and Diagonal (L3, L5). Open Monday to Friday during standard administrative hours. Appointments booked in advance through the central portal.

Can I book a NIE appointment in Barcelona without a Spanish phone number?

The portal requires a phone number for the SMS confirmation and strongly prefers Spanish mobile numbers. International numbers can be inconsistent. If you do not have a Spanish number, your representative under Power of Attorney can book the slot using their Spanish number.

Is the NIE appointment in Barcelona conducted in Spanish or Catalan?

Officially in Spanish — the language of the Spanish national police administration. Officers may speak Catalan among themselves and switch informally with Catalan-speaking applicants. For non-Catalan-speaking foreigners, the appointment runs in Spanish.

Why is it hard to get a NIE appointment in Barcelona in summer?

Demand peaks between June and September — students, summer property transactions, autumn relocations, and year-end tax registrations converge. The Oficina does not add capacity for the peak. New slots are released throughout the schedule but disappear quickly during peak periods.

Are appointments at the Sant Cugat office really faster?

Often yes. Sant Cugat serves the western Vallès district with lower demand than the central Barcelona districts. Document requirements are identical. The trade-off is travel: approximately 25–30 minutes from central Barcelona by FGC train.

Can I get a NIE in Barcelona the same day as my appointment?

In many cases yes. With a complete and correct file, the officer typically issues the NIE certificate during the appointment. The "same day" assumes you already have a confirmed appointment — getting that appointment is the hard part, not the issuing.

Is it worth using a Barcelona gestoría instead of applying myself?

A local gestoría can prepare your documents and accompany you for a fee — useful if your Spanish is limited and you can be in Barcelona for the appointment. If you cannot be in Barcelona at all, a gestoría cannot solve the problem on its own: it needs a Power of Attorney from you to attend in your stead, at which point the service is operationally equivalent to a representative service.
