Can a foreigner open a bank account in Portugal?
If you are a non-resident but have a NIF number (Portuguese tax number), you can open your account online.
How to open a bank account in Portugal?
To open a bank account in Portugal, you'll need to provide several essential documents, including a valid passport or ID card, proof of address (such as a utility bill), and a Portuguese tax identification number (NIF). Most banks will also require proof of income or employment, such as a work contract or pay slip. Some may request additional documentation, depending on the type of account. You can open an account either in person at a bank branch or online with certain banks offering digital services. Non-residents are also allowed to open accounts, but they may face additional requirements or restrictions.
What bank can you help to open in Portugal for foreigners?
Novobanco is one of the best banks in Portugal for foreigners, and it is the one we are able to open remotely. We can open accounts with the other top Portuguese banks — Millennium BCP, Banco Santander Totta and Caixa Geral de Depósitos — only in person.
Can I open a bank account in Portugal without a TRC?
Yes, you can.
All you'll need is a representative to get your NIF sorted out, then open the account on your behalf. You don't even need proof of an address in Portugal.
What is the minimum amount to open a bank account in Portugal?
In most Portuguese banks, you need to make an initial deposit in order to open your account.
You can bring cash to the bank to deposit, or you can make a transfer from another account while you're at the branch. The exact amount varies by bank — for the account we open, see the minimum deposit in the account features above.
