There is no official government express service for the Spanish NIE. The fastest realistic route depends on where you are, how complete your documents are, and what bottleneck applies to your case. If you are already in Spain with a complete file and a confirmed cita previa, the appointment may issue the certificate the same day. If you cannot travel, a Power of Attorney route is generally the fastest available option. The consulate route is consistently the slowest. “Same-day NIE service”, “guaranteed 24-hour NIE”, “no waiting” — claims like these circulate widely online. They share one thing: the Spanish administration that actually issues the NIE has no such priority channel.

The Dirección General de la Policía processes NIE applications through a single procedural pipeline at the Oficina de Extranjería. There is no priority lane, no premium queue, no expedited channel reserved for paying customers. What changes timing is the route chosen, the completeness of the file, and the readiness of supporting documents.

That said, the realistic spread between routes is large. A complete file at the in-person appointment can yield the certificate during the appointment itself. The in-person route can issue the NIE during the appointment if the file is complete. The question is whether a cita previa is available within your time window.

The official portal refreshes available slots regularly throughout the day and overnight. From June through September, slots that would appear within a week in March may take six weeks or more.

Practical moves:

• Check the portal across the day and in the early morning. New slots are released throughout the schedule, not at a fixed time. Daily monitoring is more effective than weekly.
• Try every office in the province. Secondary offices often have shorter queues. In Barcelona: Mallorca 213 + Rambla Guipúzcoa + L’Hospitalet + Sant Cugat. In Madrid: Av. de los Poblados + Padre Piquer.
• Consider nearby provinces with lower demand — only with a genuine connection. Officers can refuse the application if no real connection (residence, property, employer) is shown.

• “Premium” or “priority” payments to private services. There is no priority queue inside the Oficina de Extranjería. A premium fee may buy better service from the provider — but not faster processing from the authorities.
• Telling the officer your case is urgent. Officers process the file on its administrative merits. A complete file is what speeds the appointment.
• Submitting in a quieter province with a fake or weak address. Officers can refuse the application if no real connection to the province is shown.
• Paying extra for an “express” Tasa version. There is no express version. The Tasa 790-012 has one procedure code and one amount for NIE assignment.
