NIF Password — How to Receive Your Portal das Finanças Access

Your NIF gives you a Portuguese tax identification number — but to actually log in to Portal das Finanças, manage your tax records, file declarations, or check notices from Autoridade Tributária, you need a password (Senha de Acesso). This password is not issued automatically with your NIF — you have to request it separately. This guide explains how to get your NIF password, how it reaches you, and what to do if it does not arrive. If you do not have a NIF yet, get a NIF Portugal online first.

How the NIF password reaches you

Here is the part most non-residents do not expect: Autoridade Tributária sends your NIF password by physical post, not by email. The letter is posted to your tax domicile (domicílio fiscal) — the address registered with AT. For non-residents, this is typically your fiscal representative’s address in Portugal.

This is why our fiscal representation service matters: when AT posts your NIF password, your representative receives it, scans the letter, and forwards the password to you by email. Without a fiscal representative, the letter would go to your foreign address — which is slow, often unreliable, and not how Portuguese tax post is designed to work.

Step-by-step: requesting your NIF password

1. Have your NIF ready. You need your NIF (the 9-digit number from your AT document) to request the password. If you do not have your NIF yet, apply for one first — see our NIF Portugal Online guide.
2. Submit the password request. Go to Portal das Finanças (portaldasfinancas.gov.pt) and click “Iniciar Sessão”, then “Registar-se”. Fill in your NIF, full name, tax domicile, email, and a security question, then submit.
3. Wait for the letter from AT. Autoridade Tributária prints your password and posts it to your tax domicile by CTT (Portuguese post). Standard delivery: 5–10 working days for addresses in Portugal. If we act as your fiscal representative, we receive the letter in Lisbon and scan it the same day.
4. Receive your password by email. If we are your fiscal representative, we forward the password to you by encrypted email within 24 hours of receiving the letter. If you used a different fiscal representative, contact them about their forwarding policy.
5. Change the password on first login. The password from AT is single-use — Portal das Finanças requires you to set a new one. Choose a strong password: at least 8 characters, a mix of upper and lower case, numbers, and one special character.

NIF password not arriving — troubleshooting

If your NIF password has not arrived 10 working days after your request:

• Check the tax domicile registered on Portal das Finanças — if the address is wrong, the letter never arrives. Update the address and request the password again.
• Contact your fiscal representative — they may already have the letter and are waiting to forward it.
• Contact CTT — the Portuguese postal service can confirm whether the letter was attempted or returned.
• Contact Autoridade Tributária through e-balcão (online support) at info.portaldasfinancas.gov.pt — open a ticket about the password not arriving. AT’s official guidance on portal credentials is in the Senha de acesso section.
• Call AT at +351 217 206 707 (CAT support line, 09:00–19:00 on working days).

Lost NIF password

If you received your password but later lost it, request a new one through Portal das Finanças. Go to “Recuperar Senha”, answer the security question you set during registration, and AT will send a new password by post (5–10 working days) or by SMS code if you have a verified mobile number on file.

If you do not remember your security question, send an email to portal-senhas@at.gov.pt with your NIF, full name, tax domicile, and a copy of your ID. AT will cancel the existing password, and you can request a new one through the standard process.

Security and best practices

• Never share your NIF password — Autoridade Tributária will never ask for it by email or phone.
