What is a codice fiscale?
The codice fiscale is a 16-character personal tax code issued by Agenzia delle Entrate, the Italian Revenue Agency. It is generated from your name, date of birth, gender, and place of birth, and it identifies you in every dealing with Italian institutions — public or private.
It is issued once, never expires, and holding one does not make you an Italian tax resident. Residents and non-residents alike need it: without a codice fiscale you cannot open a bank account, sign a rental contract, or be put on an employment contract in Italy.
What the 16 characters encode
Why do you need a codice fiscale?
Almost every administrative and financial step in Italy starts with this code. You will be asked for it when you want to:
Open a bank account
Italian banks and fintechs require a codice fiscale before opening any account — personal or business.
Rent or buy property
Rental contracts, purchase deeds, and mortgage applications are all registered against your code.
Set up utilities
Electricity, gas, water, internet, and phone contracts in your name all require the code.
Work or start a business
Employment contracts, freelance registration, and company formation all start with a codice fiscale.
Study or access healthcare
University enrollment and registration with the Italian national health service both ask for it.
Apply for visas and permits
Most Italian visa and residence-permit applications ask for a codice fiscale in the paperwork.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a codice fiscale online?
To get a codice fiscale online, you upload one identity document — a passport or EU national ID card — through our secure platform and sign a Power of Attorney electronically. Our legal team files your application with Agenzia delle Entrate and sends you the official certificato di attribuzione by email within a few business days.
What documents do I need for a codice fiscale?
You need a single document: a valid passport (for non-EU citizens) or an EU national ID card. You do not need an Italian address, a visa, or proof of address — your current home address abroad is simply stated in the application.
How long does it take to get a codice fiscale?
Remote applications filed through our service are typically completed within a few business days from the moment we receive your identity document and signed Power of Attorney. Applying through an Italian consulate yourself can take considerably longer, depending on appointment availability in your country.
Can I get a codice fiscale without going to Italy?
Yes. You do not need to be in Italy — or ever have visited — to obtain a codice fiscale. Non-residents can apply through an Italian consulate abroad or authorize a representative in Italy to file on their behalf. Our service uses the second route: you sign a Power of Attorney and we handle the filing with Agenzia delle Entrate.
What is a codice fiscale?
The codice fiscale is Italy's personal tax identification code — a 16-character alphanumeric code issued by Agenzia delle Entrate, the Italian Revenue Agency. It is generated from your surname, first name, date of birth, gender, and place of birth, plus a final check character. Every person who interacts with Italian institutions — residents and non-residents alike — needs one.
Does a codice fiscale expire?
No. The codice fiscale is issued once and is valid for life. If you lose your certificate, you are not assigned a new code — you simply request a new copy of the document for the same code.
Does getting a codice fiscale make me an Italian tax resident?
No. The codice fiscale is only an identification code — it does not create tax residency, tax obligations, or reporting duties by itself. Tax residency in Italy depends on separate criteria, such as spending more than 183 days a year in the country or having your main center of interests there.
Do I need a codice fiscale to open an Italian bank account?
Yes. Italian banks — and most fintechs operating in Italy — require a codice fiscale to open an account. The same applies to signing a rental contract, buying property, connecting utilities, getting an Italian SIM card under contract, and signing an employment contract.
Will I receive a plastic card?
Non-residents receive the official certificato di attribuzione — the certificate of attribution issued by Agenzia delle Entrate — as a document, which is fully valid for banks, notaries, and contracts. The plastic card (combined with the health card, tessera sanitaria) is only issued to people registered as residents with the Italian national health service.
Is the codice fiscale free?
The code itself is issued free of charge by Agenzia delle Entrate if you apply in person at a tax office in Italy or through an Italian consulate abroad. Our fee covers the remote route: legal review of your document, preparation of the Power of Attorney, filing with the Revenue Agency, and delivery of the certificate — with a 100% money-back guarantee if we cannot deliver your code.
Can I get a codice fiscale for my spouse or child?
Yes. Each family member needs their own codice fiscale, and each application is filed individually. For a minor, the application is signed by a parent or legal guardian and requires the child's passport or EU ID card together with the parent's identity document.
What is the codice fiscale made of — what do the 16 characters mean?
The code encodes your personal data: three consonants from your surname, three from your first name, your year, month, and day of birth (the day is offset by 40 for women), a code for your place of birth — a foreign country code for people born outside Italy — and a final check character computed from the rest.
Is E-Residence connected to Estonia's e-Residency?
No. E-Residence is not connected to Estonia's e-Residency program. We are a legal services company specializing in EU tax identification numbers — codice fiscale in Italy, NIF in Portugal, NIE in Spain — and related relocation documents. Estonia's e-Residency is a different service — a digital identity for non-Estonians to start an EU company in Estonia, available at e-resident.gov.ee.
