How to apply for a Portuguese NIF from Australia: which consulate to use
In this article
Short answer. To apply for a Portuguese NIF from Australia, start with your address: the Consular Section of the Embassy in Canberra covers the Australian Capital Territory (plus New Zealand and Pacific states); the Consulate General in Sydney covers the rest of Australia. The post recognises your signature on the AT form and forwards your file; the NIF itself is assigned by the Autoridade Tributária e Aduaneira (AT), not by the consulate.
This is an independent guide by E-Residence, a private service. It is not an official website of any consulate and does not control appointments; every procedure in it links to its official source. Recheck the official page on the day you act.
For the wider picture of how non-residents get a Portuguese NIF — including the fiscal representative rules — see our guide to the NIF for non-residents. Here, the focus is Australia and its posts.
Which office covers your address?
Australia splits between an embassy consular section and one consulate general, with honorary consulates under Sydney that cannot perform consular acts. The districts below are reproduced from each post’s published list. Residence is the starting point — not nationality, and not the post with the most convenient appointment.
| Where you live (registered address) | Office | Start here |
|---|---|---|
| Australian Capital Territory | Consular Section of the Embassy, Canberra | Canberra post page |
| Any Australian state outside the ACT | Consulate General, Sydney | Sydney contact page |
The embassy section’s district also extends across the Pacific: New Zealand, Fiji, Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, Samoa, Tokelau, Niue, the Cook Islands, Pitcairn, Vanuatu, Tuvalu, Kiribati, Nauru, the Marshall Islands, Palau and Micronesia. Neither post publishes a NIF-specific page — where a post does not, its contact and booking channel is the starting point; ask the post which documents it wants for the signature act before you book.
The consular NIF route: what applies across Australia
Every post here serves the same national procedure, with differences in booking. The shared points, as the posts and the tax authority describe them:
- A NIF can be requested directly from Portugal’s tax services or through the consular route. The AT’s e-balcão and the Serviços de Finanças are the direct channels; the consular route runs through the post, which witnesses your signature and forwards the file.
- The post does not issue the NIF — the AT does. The number is assigned by the Autoridade Tributária e Aduaneira (AT), Portugal’s tax authority.
- Fiscal representative — the third-country rule applies. Australia is outside the EU/EEA, so once a tax relationship with Portugal exists (property, vehicle, work contract or self-employed activity), you must within 15 days either appoint a fiscal representative in Portugal or adhere to the AT’s electronic notification channels (Portal das Finanças notifications or ViaCTT). Requesting a NIF as such does not by itself require a representative; self-employed activity subject to VAT always requires a VAT representative resident in Portugal.
- The NIF request is free; the post’s fee is for its own act. The Portuguese government’s guide states the NIF request is free of charge. What an Australian post charges is its emolument for the signature recognition — neither post publishes a current public fee table on the pages this guide draws on, so ask your post. Sydney’s published payment rule: payments in Australian dollars or by Multibanco/transfer.
- Booking channels differ — the details are below. Canberra requires a prior appointment booked by phone or email; Sydney uses online booking.
Prefer to prepare your application with E-Residence? Start a NIF enquiry — a private service that helps you organise the paperwork before you contact the office. An enquiry does not create, confirm or replace an official appointment.
Office by office: how each one handles NIF applications
Canberra — consular section of the embassy
The embassy’s consular section in Canberra covers the Australian Capital Territory, and its district extends far beyond: New Zealand and the Pacific states — Fiji, Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, Samoa, Tokelau, Niue, the Cook Islands, Pitcairn, Vanuatu, Tuvalu, Kiribati, Nauru, the Marshall Islands, Palau and Micronesia. Public hours are 9:30–13:00 and 14:00–17:00, Monday to Friday, and a prior appointment is mandatory for consular matters, booked by phone or email. The post’s directory entry publishes no direct phone or email of its own — the post page carries its current contact channels. It publishes no NIF-specific page — start from the post page and ask which documents it wants for the signature act. Canberra post page
Sydney — consulate general
Sydney covers all of Australia except the ACT, and five honorary consulates (Adelaide, Brisbane, Darwin, Melbourne and Perth) work under its direction — they assist Portuguese nationals but cannot perform the general civil-registry and notarial acts a NIF signature recognition belongs to. Booking runs online, with counter service Monday to Friday, 9:00 to 12:30. Contact channels: consulado.sidney@mne.pt and gec@mne.pt, phone +(612) 92 62 21 99. Its published payment rule: payments in Australian dollars or by Multibanco/transfer. It publishes no NIF-specific page — the online booking system and the contact channels are the starting point. Addresses and map links
| Office | Address | Open the map |
|---|---|---|
| Canberra (consular section) | Australian Capital Territory | Google Maps |
| Sydney | Suite 1501 Level 15, 55 Clarence St, Sydney NSW 2000 | Google Maps |
These are the posts’ published addresses. The map links are navigation aids — they do not confirm which service a building hosts, and they are no substitute for the post’s own page. Check the address there before travelling.
What this guide does not confirm
- Processing times. Neither post publishes a processing time for this route, and neither publishes appointment waiting times — treat any figure you hear as unofficial and recheck on the day.
- The exact emolument amounts. Neither Australian post publishes a current public fee table on the pages this guide draws on; ask your post before booking. The NIF itself is free.
- The extent of each post’s NIF role. Some consular posts complete full NIF formalities and others only witness the signature on the AT form; neither Australian post publishes which of the two it does — ask when booking.
- Canberra’s street address. The post’s directory entry lists its district as the Australian Capital Territory without a street address — the post page and a phone call confirm the exact visit location before you travel.
- Honorary consulates as service points. Adelaide, Brisbane, Darwin, Melbourne and Perth assist Portuguese nationals under Sydney’s direction but cannot perform the civil-registry and notarial acts the signature recognition belongs to — do not book a NIF act with them.
Want a second pair of eyes on your document set before you contact the office? Send your situation through a short NIF enquiry. We flag gaps before the post does — an enquiry does not replace or speed up the official procedure.
Frequently asked questions
Which Portuguese consulate in Australia covers my address?
It depends on your state or territory. The Consular Section of the Embassy in Canberra covers the Australian Capital Territory — and, beyond Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific states (Fiji, Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, Samoa, Tokelau, Niue, the Cook Islands, Pitcairn, Vanuatu, Tuvalu, Kiribati, Nauru, the Marshall Islands, Palau and Micronesia). The Consulate General in Sydney covers all of Australia except the ACT. Five honorary consulates (Adelaide, Brisbane, Darwin, Melbourne and Perth) depend on Sydney but cannot perform consular acts. Confirm your district with your post before contacting it.

Does the consulate issue my NIF?
No. The NIF is assigned by the Autoridade Tributária e Aduaneira (AT), the Portuguese tax authority — consular posts do not issue it. The posts’ consular role is to witness the signature on the AT form, forward the file and deal with the AT afterwards. You can also request the NIF directly from the AT, without going through a post.

Do I need a fiscal representative in Portugal?
Australia is outside the EU, so the European optional regime does not apply to you. Requesting a NIF as a non-resident does not by itself require a representative. Per the AT leaflet, once a tax legal relationship with Portugal exists — a property, a vehicle, an employment contract or self-employed activity — a resident of a third country must, within 15 days, either appoint a fiscal representative in Portugal or adhere to the AT’s electronic notification channels (Portal das Finanças notifications or ViaCTT). A self-employed activity subject to VAT always requires a VAT representative resident in Portugal.

Which form and documents do I bring?
The AT leaflet for non-residents describes the document base as a valid civil identification document or passport, plus the tax authority’s form for non-residents, and a document showing your address abroad unless the address is shown in the ID. Where a representative is named, the nomination runs on the form the AT publishes (Anexo III), or you opt into electronic notifications instead. Confirm the exact document set with your post on the day you act.

What does it cost?
The NIF request itself is free — the Portuguese government’s guide states it. What a post charges is its emolument for the signature recognition. Neither Australian post publishes the amount on the pages this guide draws on: ask your post for its current fee table before the appointment. Sydney’s published payment rule is that payments are made in Australian dollars or by Multibanco/transfer.

How do I learn the result, and how long does it take?
Neither post publishes a processing time for the consular route, and appointment availability is not published either — treat any estimate as unofficial. Where you have appointed a fiscal representative, the AT’s correspondence goes through the representative. Recheck your post’s page and the official links on the day you act.

Choose your next step
You can run the whole process yourself through the official channels above — the NIF request is free, and the consular part costs your post’s emolument. Recheck your post’s page on the day you act, because document lists and forms change.
Prefer to prepare with E-Residence? Start a NIF enquiry and describe your purpose in one or two sentences. An enquiry does not replace the official procedure; it helps you arrive at it prepared.
