How to apply for a Spanish NIE from Hungary: which consulate to use
In this article
Short answer. To apply for a Spanish NIE from Hungary you have one Spanish consular office to deal with: the consular section of the Embassy of Spain in Budapest, which is competent for the whole Hungarian territory. The office receives your application, but the NIE itself is assigned by Spain’s General Commissariat for Immigration and Borders, and it arrives by email.
This is an independent guide by E-Residence, a private service. It is not an official website of any consulate and does not control appointments; every procedure in it links to its official source. Recheck the official page on the day you act.
For the wider picture of how consular NIE applications work, see our guide to NIE applications at Spanish consulates outside Spain. Here, the focus is Hungary and its single consular office.
Which office covers your address?
The consular district for Hungary follows the embassy’s own published division, and it is the simplest of the series: one office covers the whole country. Residence is the starting point — not nationality, and not the office with the most convenient appointment. The table below matches the office’s published district.
| Where you live (registered address) | Office | Start here |
|---|---|---|
| Anywhere in Hungary | Consular section, Embassy of Spain in Budapest | Budapest NIE page |
There is no second office to compare districts with. The embassy’s official consular-office directory for Hungary is the source of this district, and it states that the consular section of the embassy in Budapest is competent for the entire Hungarian territory. If you are unsure whether your case falls to the consular section or to another service of the embassy, ask before you prepare the file.
The consular NIE route: what applies across Hungary
The office follows the same national procedure as every Spanish consular post, with local differences in how you book and what you bring. The shared points, as published by the offices themselves:
- A NIE can be requested directly in Spain or at the consular office for your country of residence. From Hungary, that is the consular section of the embassy in Budapest.
- You apply in person or through a duly accredited representative — and the physical presence of the applicant or the representative is always mandatory. Do not read the representative route as one that removes attendance altogether.
- You must state the economic, professional or social reasons that justify the application, and the office may ask for documents proving them.
- The standard document set is an EX-15 form (original and one copy), a valid passport with a copy of the data page (EU citizens may use a national identity document), proof of residence in the consular district, and a completed Modelo 790, Código 012 with the fee paid.
- The consular NIE is identification, not residence. The office states that a NIE processed through it is not valid to reside in Spain and does not accredit residence there, and that anyone planning to settle in Spain must check visa requirements first.
- The consulate does not issue the number. It is assigned by the General Commissariat for Immigration and Borders, part of Spain’s Directorate-General for the Police. The consular office cannot speed up processing, and the NIE is sent to the applicant by email — so put a working notification address on the form.

Office by office: how each one runs NIE applications
Budapest — consular section of the embassy
Hungary has a single Spanish consular office for NIE purposes: the consular section of the embassy in Budapest, at Eötvös utca 11/B, 1067 Budapest. Its NIE page sets out the route in the same terms as the other consular posts — a NIE may be requested in Spain or at the consular office of your country of residence, in person or through a duly accredited representative — and then says that more information on how to apply may be requested from this consular office by email (emb.budapest@maec.es). That is the published starting point: the office itself gives the appointment details, so ask it how it wants your request submitted rather than assuming a booking site. The page restates the standard documents, including the proof of residence in the consular area, and for the fee it refers you to the consular-services fee page of the embassy rather than printing a figure on the NIE page. Addresses and map links
| Office | Address | Open the map |
|---|---|---|
| Consular section, Embassy of Spain in Budapest | Eötvös utca 11/B, 1067 Budapest | Google Maps |
This is the office’s published address. The map link is a navigation aid built from that address — it does not confirm which service a building hosts, and it is no substitute for the office’s own page. Check the address there before travelling, and confirm the entrance with the office, since the embassy and its consular section share the same building.
What this guide does not confirm
- Which document proves residence. The office’s list asks for a document proving residence in its consular area, but does not spell out which paper is accepted in every situation. This guide does not confirm a single accepted document — ask the consular section what will establish your residence.
- Appointment waiting times. No wait is published. This guide does not confirm how long you will wait for a slot — ask the office when you request one.
- The fee figure. The NIE page does not print an amount for Hungary; it points to the consular-services fee page of the embassy. Take the current figure from there, or from the payment form, on the day you pay.
- A processing timeline for the NIE. The number is assigned by the General Commissariat for Immigration and Borders and the consulate cannot shorten the wait. This guide does not confirm a duration for Hungary — treat any estimate you see quoted elsewhere as unconfirmed.
- Walk-in service. No page reviewed here describes accepting NIE applications without an appointment, so arrange the route with the office first.
Want a second pair of eyes on your document set before you email the office? Send your situation through a short NIE enquiry. We flag gaps before the office does — an enquiry does not replace or speed up the official procedure.
Frequently asked questions
Which Spanish consulate in Hungary covers my address?
There is only one. The consular section of the Embassy of Spain in Budapest is competent for the entire Hungarian territory, so your address inside Hungary does not change the office you deal with: the embassy’s consular directory states that its consular section covers the whole country. Confirm the current contact route with the office before you send anything.

Do I need proof of residence in Hungary to apply through the consulate?
Yes. The document list the office publishes includes a document proving residence in its consular area, alongside the EX-15 form, your valid passport and the 790-012 payment. The page does not spell out which paper is accepted in every situation, so ask the consular section what will establish your residence before you submit.
Can someone else submit the application — do I have to attend in person?
The applicant or a duly accredited representative must attend; the office states that the physical presence of the applicant or of their representative is mandatory in every case. If you act through a representative, you also need that person’s identity document or passport and a power of attorney that expressly authorises them to present the NIE application. The office cannot be replaced by post or by a plain signed letter.

Does the consular NIE let me live or work in Spain?
No. A NIE obtained through a consulate is an identification number: the office states that it identifies the bearer to the Spanish public administration but does not entitle the holder to reside in Spain or prove residence there. Anyone who wants to settle in Spain has to check the visa requirements first — that route starts in Spain, not at the consulate.

Who assigns the NIE, and how long does it take?
The number is assigned by the General Commissariat for Immigration and Borders, under Spain’s Directorate-General for the Police — not by the consulate, which cannot shorten the processing time. This guide does not confirm a processing time for Hungary; treat any timeline you see quoted elsewhere as unconfirmed and ask the consular section for the current expectation. The NIE is delivered by email, so put a working notification address on the form.

Where do I get the EX-15 and how do I pay the fee?
Both come from the office’s own NIE page: the EX-15 application form (original and one copy, completed and signed) and Modelo 790, Código 012 for the fee. The page does not print a fixed amount for Hungary; it refers you to the consular-services fee page of the embassy. Take the current figure from there, or ask the consular section, on the day you pay.

You can run the whole process yourself through the official channels above — it costs the official fee and one appointment at the consular section in Budapest. Recheck the office’s page on the day you act, because document lists and fees change.
Prefer to prepare with E-Residence? Start an NIE enquiry and describe your purpose in one or two sentences. An enquiry does not replace the official procedure; it helps you arrive at it prepared.
