How to apply for a Spanish NIE from Indonesia: which consulate to use

Last updated: By

Short answer. To apply for a Spanish NIE from Indonesia you have one Spanish consular office to deal with: the consular section of the Embassy of Spain in Jakarta, which is competent for the whole Indonesian territory. The office receives your application, but the NIE itself is assigned by Spain’s General Commissariat for Immigration and Borders, and it arrives by email.

This is an independent guide by E-Residence, a private service. It is not an official website of any consulate and does not control appointments; every procedure in it links to its official source. Recheck the official page on the day you act.

For the wider picture of how consular NIE applications work, see our guide to NIE applications at Spanish consulates outside Spain. Here, the focus is Indonesia and its single consular office.

Which office covers your address?

The consular district for Indonesia follows the embassy’s own published division, and it is the simplest of the series: one office covers the whole country. Residence is the starting point — not nationality, and not the office with the most convenient appointment. The table below matches the office’s published district.

There is no second office to compare districts with. The embassy’s jurisdiction also lists two honorary consulates — Bali (Seminyak) and Dili (Timor-Leste) — but the same note limits their competences, so the consular section of the embassy in Jakarta is the office for a NIE application. The embassy’s official consular-office directory for Indonesia is the source of this district, and it states that the consular section of the embassy in Jakarta is competent for the entire Indonesian territory. If you are unsure whether your case falls to the embassy’s consular section or to another service of the embassy, ask before you prepare the file.

The consular NIE route: what applies across Indonesia

The office follows the same national procedure as every Spanish consular post, with local differences in how you book and what you bring. The shared points, as published by the offices themselves:

  • A NIE can be requested directly in Spain or at the consular office for your country of residence. From Indonesia, that is the consular section of the embassy in Jakarta.
  • You apply in person or through a duly accredited representative — and the physical presence of the applicant or the representative is always mandatory. Do not read the representative route as one that removes attendance altogether.
  • You must state the economic, professional or social reasons that justify the application, and the office may ask for documents proving them.
  • The standard document set is an EX-15 form (original and one copy), a valid passport with a copy of the data page (EU citizens may use a national identity document), proof of residence in the consular district, and a completed Modelo 790, Código 012 with the fee paid.
  • The consular NIE is identification, not residence. The office states that a NIE processed through it is not valid to reside in Spain and does not accredit residence there, and that anyone planning to settle in Spain must check visa requirements first.
  • The consulate does not issue the number. It is assigned by the General Commissariat for Immigration and Borders, part of Spain’s Directorate-General for the Police. The consular office cannot speed up processing, and the NIE is sent to the applicant by email — so put a working notification address on the form.
  • Indonesia has no published booking system for this procedure. The NIE page publishes no booking channel; the embassy asks that queries about procedures and appointments be made by calling the general line during office hours.

Prefer to prepare your application with E-Residence? Start an NIE enquiry — a private service that helps you organise the paperwork before you contact the office. An enquiry does not create, confirm or replace an official appointment.

Office by office: how each one runs NIE applications

Jakarta — consular section of the embassy

Indonesia has a single Spanish consular office for NIE purposes: the consular section of the embassy in Jakarta, at Jl. Haji Agus Salim, 61, Jakarta Pusat – 10350. The NIE page publishes no booking system: the embassy asks that queries about procedures and appointments be made by calling the general line on +62-21 314 23 55 during office hours, and the consular inbox is emb.yakarta.sc@maec.es. Its NIE page restates the standard documents for this route, including the proof of residence in the consular area, and it shows the 2021 fee as an example — 9.74 euros — while pointing to the office’s fee page for the current amount. This is the office’s published address. The map link is a navigation aid built from that address — it does not confirm which service a building hosts, and it is no substitute for the office’s own page. Check the address there before travelling.

What this guide does not confirm

  • Appointment booking channel. The NIE page publishes no booking system. The published route is to call the general line during office hours, so this guide does not confirm an online booking path for Indonesia.
  • Appointment waiting times. The embassy publishes the contact route, not a wait. This guide does not confirm how long you will wait for an appointment — ask the office when you call.
  • The fee figure. The NIE page shows only the 2021 example, 9.74 euros, and points to the office fee page. Take the current figure from there, or from the payment form, on the day you pay.
  • A processing timeline for the NIE. The number is assigned by the General Commissariat for Immigration and Borders and the consulate cannot shorten the wait. This guide does not confirm a duration for Indonesia — treat any estimate quoted elsewhere as unconfirmed.
  • Walk-in service. No page reviewed here describes accepting NIE applications without an appointment. Presence is mandatory, but arrange the channel with the office first.

Want a second pair of eyes on your document set before you contact the office? Send your situation through a short NIE enquiry. We flag gaps before the office does — an enquiry does not replace or speed up the official procedure.

Frequently asked questions

Which Spanish consulate in Indonesia covers my address?

There is only one. The consular section of the Embassy of Spain in Jakarta is competent for the entire Indonesian territory, so your address inside Indonesia does not change the office you deal with. The embassy’s jurisdiction lists two honorary consulates — Bali (Seminyak) and Dili (Timor-Leste) — but with limited competences, so the consular section in Jakarta is the office for a NIE. Confirm the current contact route with the office before you send anything.

Do I need proof of residence in Indonesia to apply through the consulate?

Yes. The document list the office publishes includes a document proving residence in its consular area, alongside the EX-15 form, your valid passport and the 790-012 payment. The page does not spell out which paper is accepted in every situation, so ask the consular section what will establish your residence before you act.

Can someone else submit the application — do I have to attend in person?

The applicant or a duly accredited representative must attend; the office states that the physical presence of the applicant or of their representative is mandatory in every case. If you act through a representative, you also need that person’s identity document or passport and a power of attorney that expressly authorises them to present the NIE application. The office cannot be replaced by post or by a plain signed letter.

Does the consular NIE let me live or work in Spain?

No. A NIE obtained through a consulate is an identification number: the office states that it identifies the bearer to the Spanish public administration but does not entitle the holder to reside in Spain or prove residence there. Anyone who wants to settle in Spain has to check the visa requirements first — that route starts in Spain, not at the consulate.

Who assigns the NIE, and how long does it take?

The number is assigned by the General Commissariat for Immigration and Borders, under Spain’s Directorate-General for the Police — not by the consulate, which cannot shorten the processing time. This guide does not confirm a processing time for Indonesia; treat any timeline you see quoted elsewhere as unconfirmed and ask the consular section for the current expectation. The NIE is delivered by email, so put a working notification address on the form.

Where do I get the EX-15 and how do I pay the fee?

Both come from the office’s own NIE page: the EX-15 application form (original and one copy, completed and signed) and Modelo 790, Código 012 for the fee. That page shows the 2021 fee as an example — 9.74 euros — and points to the office’s fee page for the current figure. Take the amount from there, or ask the consular section, on the day you pay.

Choose your next step

You can run the whole process yourself through the official channels above — it costs the official fee and one appointment at the consular section in Jakarta. Recheck the office’s page on the day you act, because document lists and fees change.

Prefer to prepare with E-Residence? Start an NIE enquiry and describe your purpose in one or two sentences. An enquiry does not replace the official procedure; it helps you arrive at it prepared.
