NIF Portugal Documents — What You Need for Your Online Application
To apply for NIF Portugal online, you need two main documents — proof of identity and proof of address. The exact requirements depend on whether you are an EU citizen, a non-EU citizen, or applying on behalf of a minor. This guide covers all NIF Portugal document requirements with the format specifications accepted by Autoridade Tributária e Aduaneira (AT) and our legal team. When your documents are ready, you can apply for NIF Portugal online — or follow the detailed application guide for non-residents for the full process.
Choose your scenario
- I am an adult applying for myself. You need two documents — see Standard documents below.
- I am applying for myself and my family. Each family member needs their own set of documents. For children, see Documents for minors. For couples, both adults need full sets.
- I am applying for a minor. You need the child’s passport, both parents’ passports, at least one parent’s NIF, and a translated birth certificate with apostille. See Documents for minors.
- Someone is applying on my behalf. A Power of Attorney is required — see Power of Attorney.
Standard documents
| Document | EU/EEA citizen | Non-EU citizen |
|---|---|---|
| Proof of identity | Color scan of national ID card (front and back) or passport | Color scan of valid passport (photo + details page) |
| Proof of address | Issued outside Portugal, under 3 months old | Issued outside Portugal, under 3 months old |
| Driver’s license as ID | Not accepted as proof of identity | Not accepted as proof of identity |
Non-EU citizens provide a color scan of a valid passport — the page with photo and personal details. UK citizens (including post-Brexit) and citizens of all third countries follow this rule.
Proof of identity — technical requirements
- Resolution: 300 dpi or higher
- Format: JPEG or PNG
- Color, not black and white
- The signature must be visible on the ID document
- The document must be valid (not expired)
Proof of address
Proof of address must be issued outside Portugal — Autoridade Tributária requires a non-Portuguese address for non-resident applications. Accepted documents:
- Utility bill (electricity, water, gas, internet) — no older than 3 months
- Bank statement — no older than 3 months
- Driver’s license — current
- Residence certificate from your local authority
The document must be in English, Spanish, French, or Portuguese, show your full name as on your passport or ID, and show your full address (street, number, postal code, city, country). For more on Portuguese-side documents after you move, see proof of address Portugal and proof of address for EU citizens.
Documents for minors
To apply for NIF Portugal for a minor (under 18), the parent or legal guardian provides:
- The minor’s passport (color scan, 300 dpi)
- A translated birth certificate with apostille (if not originally issued in EN/ES/FR/PT)
- The passport or EU ID of both parents (color scan)
- The NIF of at least one parent
- Proof of address (any one parent’s address is sufficient)
Power of Attorney
To apply for NIF Portugal online, our Portuguese legal team needs a Power of Attorney signed by you. The POA authorizes us to file your application with Autoridade Tributária and, for non-EU applicants, to serve as your fiscal representative for the first 12 months.
Our POA is digital — you sign electronically through our secure portal. No notary visit, no mailing of physical documents. The signed POA is automatically attached to your application file. Once your NIF is issued, here is what your NIF document looks like.
